This year 2018, will be a lot happening year for the smartphones. Yes, why we said this because of one of the Taiwanese tech giant ‘Asus’ which was quite from some time. Now being developing different smartphones from their old ones. Apart from that, the company has launched their new flagship smartphone “Asus Zenfone 5Z” in India now.

As Asus followed on the step of Xiaomi to offer premium hardware options at affordable prices. The year beginning, Company launched the Zenfone Max Pro M1, which was with stock android and strong hardware. Even though it made tough competition for Xiaomi Note 5 Pro in terms of price point, as ‘Valuable for Money’. It seems like now, the Company has followed the same strategy in the mid-range segment by offering powerful inputs in Zenfone 5Z to compete with Oneplus 6.

Asus Zenfone 5Z powered by the top-of-the-line processor Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset and dominating artificial intelligence-equipped dual camera at the back. It camera automatically detects the scenes such as night, ocean, food etc. Due to at such low price offering, it is creating tough competition for other smartphones in this segment Oneplus 6, Vivo X21, Oppo Find X and many more. Apparently not only creating competition but also guaranteeing more features and benefits from other at this price segment.

So, without wasting time, moving to our review. Does Asus Zenfone 5Z can really be worth to buy and be able to wipe off other flagship smartphones?

Asus Zenfone 5Z: Design and Display

The Asus Zenfone 5Z looks closely like oneplus 6 as feels like a premium handset. The Phone is covered with 2.5D curved glass at front and back, along with the aerospace-grade aluminium frame at the sides. The Asus Zenfone 5Z back is made up the glass, so it is convenient to use wireless charging charger. But the phone doesn’t come with an IP rating for waterproofing, so you will need to cover the phone from any such events.

Coming to the front, it has a 6.2-inch IPS Full HD+(1080 x 2246 resolution) display with a 19:9 aspect ratio and makes it feel big and tapered in hand. At the top, it has Notch-like iPhone X along with a front-facing camera, earpiece and essential sensors. The company also mentioned that, if anybody doesn’t like Notch can hide it through its settings inside the phone. The display is covered with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for protection. The Asus Zenfone 5Z screen has good viewing angles and the colours are more vibrant and brighter than Oneplus 6. Asus has used the camera colour temperature sensor which adjusts the screen lighting as per ambient light.

At the back, it is packed with the dual camera module in vertical just above the Single LED flash. The Fingerprint sensor is nicely placed at above middle and fast to unlock the phone.

Where else at the bottom of the Asus Zenfone 5Z, you will find the 3.5mm headphone jack, a speaker grille with 5 magnet speaker powered by dual NXP amplifiers, and the USB-Type C charging point along the main microphone. The third microphone is placed at the top.

In the box you get, a decent case for Asus Zenfone 5Z and 18watts charger with USB type A to USB type-c cable for charging. The company has also given Hi-Res-certified in-ear headphones.

In terms of power under the hood, Asus Zenfone 5Z is similar to Oneplus 6. As it is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor. It is Octa-core processor which is clocked at 2.8Ghz speed. The handset is offered in three storage variants which are 6GB RAM for 64GB internal storage, 6GB RAM for 128GB internal storage and the third one is 8GB RAM for 256GB internal storage. Although all the variants come with the option of expandable storage up to 2TB via SdCard, which can be done through hybrid dual-Sim Slot.

Asus Zenfone 5Z’s Artifical Intelligence in the form of machine learning makes it distinct from other flagships in the segment. It constantly measures your operations or utilization of handset and maximises the performance when required. For instance, The company has rolled the device with AI charging which adjusts the charging speed of the handset on the basis of your behaviour, without damaging the battery. If you plugged in overnight for charging, then no need for fast charging, it will pause the charging at 80% and tickle the charge when your time to get up. It takes a week to understand your behaviour for AI charging. the Same way the AI also come for Ringtone part also.

Asus Zenfone 5Z comes with ZenUI 5.0 based on Android 8.0 oreo out of the box. The company official also mentioned that they have revamped the UI to give the best user experience. Therefore unlike the old Asus Zenfoen, now Zenfoen 5Z supports additional themes and app manager, to configure the apps as per your requirements.

If we talk about the connectivity, the ASUS zenfone is a dual-sim handset with hybrid dual sim slots. Both the slots are supported with 4G and VoLTE option. Apart from this handset is bundled with Bluetooth 5.0, dual-band WiFi 802.11ac, NFC, GPS, GLONASS, BDS and FM Radio but no such app is mentioned for it. The company has given a shortcut for FM radio in the notification drawer.

Just like the Google Pixel or Oneplus 6, it comes with certain gesture interaction-Zenmotion. For instance, you can double tap the screen to wake or put the handset on sleep. Even can launch any app from the locked screen itself by drawing the initial or alphabet of apps. Moreover, you can use the fingerprint scanner to pull down the notification shade. Facial Recognition is also available for security.

The Asus Zenfone 5Z comes with the dual rear camera setup- 12megapixel as primary sensor and 8megapixel as a secondary camera with wide-angle lens. The primary camera uses Sony IMX363 sensor with a f/1.8 aperture and dual-pixel technology for PDAF. The front camera has an 8-megapixel sensor with 120-degree wide angle capture and AI capabilities(AI scene detection and AI photo Learning), which detects the light condition and objects as per the surrounding to give the best photos while capturing.

The Camera is simple and easy to use, easy to toggle between the cameras. Apart from that various quick toggle placed at the top like HDR, Depth Filter, Timer and Flash. While in the app to make use of other features, swipe left to use inbuilt filters and swipe right to use various modes like Pro, Super Resolution, Beauty, Slow Motion, GIF Animation, or Time Lapse mode.

However, it can disappoint in one condition, which is during night time as during that time its AI automatically activates the night mode which decreases the shutter speed and enables the HDR mode when it feels requirement.

The primary camera can record 4K videos at the 60fps speed and wide-angle camera setup can be used to record videos even from front camera. All camera is equipped with EIS(Electronic Image Stabilization) to give better autofocus detection.

Lastly, Asus Zenfone 5Z is backup by 3,300mAh battery which comes with quick charge 3.0 support. The Smartphones comes with an 18W charger which can charge 7-8 hours battery in just 40 minutes. Apparently, which is a little bit slow as compared to Oneplus 6. To complete charge it can take an hour and a half to charge the phone.

You can even select various customized battery modes for optimizing the battery life like Performance, Normal, Power Saving, and Super Saving mode.

The Asus Zenfone 5Z is starting at price point of Rs.29,999 for variant 6GBRAM and 64GB internal storage. Apart from that other variants are priced for Rs.32,999 for 6GB RAM and 128GB internal storage and Rs.36,999 8GB RAM and 256GB internal storage.

Relatively, Asus has come up with the fresh and new product in the mid-range smartphones. For sure, when it comes to price point Asus has made it now by giving the top-of-end processor Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, AI capabilities enabled software and camera, used of high-end material in design along Asus Classic look.

Some of the AI enhancements are useful and making the overall experience better. However, if you can afford Oneplus 6 then we recommend you to take that jump, apart from it chipset its performance seems more stable.
